Default Wrong cam, Cam or roller tip ratio rockers?

ok,so i found out that my late model 302 is non ho with roller lifters....Im obviously returning the cam i got for christmas but i want to know if its a good idea to get a cam of just put ratio roller tip rockers. The lowest lift roller cam i can find on summit is .498 and the springs that are required have to have the heads cut.I dont want to get into all that.So my question is, Is it more worth it just to put roller tip 1.7 on the motor.Or does someone know a place i can get a cam with lower lift. Its a street car so i want light to light and i have a professional products intake, dual plane with a 1500-5000 range.

You can use the HO firing order cam in a non-Ho engine, just wire the distributor with the proper firing order. It just switches up a few of thecylinders between what part of the 4 strokes it's on. Exhaust becomes compression, compression becomes exhaust etc. The valve timing changes, but the pistons are still in the same place. HO order is better anyway, supposedly allows for better vibration control and main bearing load. You do NOT need the HO 50oz balance factor either, I'm running the 28/28 balance factor with an HO cam and it's smooth as glass.

Oh yeah, make sure you get matching springs for whatever cam you have, and it wouldn't hurt to get full roller rockers either. Use whatever ratio rocker the cam is speced for. You can use 1.7's on a 1.6 but you need more valve spring pressure to control it.

You should be able toget away with1.7 rockers with the factory springs. One of the guys on another forum has been running a fox 5.0 for years with the factory cam and springs and 1.7 rockers. It puts added strain on the springs just like ahigher liftcam would, but the stock springs should be up to the task. You can always swap the cam and rockers out later if you want.

A cam won't make much difference on a late model 302 that has stock heads, unless they're GT40's. Most of them have the E7 heads that won't seemuch cam benefit unless you have every other bolt on. The stock roller cam is actually pretty decently matched to everything else int he engine.

Cheaper and easier, and I think you'd be happy with the results.

Yeah, in a basically stock engine the stock cam does well, and spending the money on roller rockers is good, it'll run smoother, and have a lot less wear in the valvetrain. Just be sure the stock springs are up to it, some of them can get pretty worn out after a while, and increasing to a 1.7 ratio can sometimes push them over the edge.

Before you go and buy roller rockers, check your stud size. You may only have 5/16 studs that are pressed in.
