Default '68 Shelby GT500KR - first ride

I had a chance today to take a drive in a '68 Shellby GT500KR. Red with white top, mustard tan interior. All original. The car is worth 250,000 to 300,000. I was not impressed.

The interior is very cheesy - lots of fake woodgrain, guady counsol (stiched leather or vinyl - I'm not sure which), ugly color. Overall just a cheap feel to it.

So what was it like to ride in? We only made it a few hundred feet before the car stalled out. After repeated attemtps to get it going they had to push it back into the shop. I spoke to the wrenches who have worked on it - they said it was scary fast but not big fans of the look or the general drive of the thing. I guess somtimes fantasies are better left alone.

No waywould I trade my car for it if they were of equal value.

I wonder how many other "I-wish-I-had" classics would be a big dissapointment to drive?

Yeah, that steering wheel looks like it belongs in a LTD or a wagon.

I agree - also much of the badging looks like it was found in a Cracker Jack box. The earlier 65/66 Shellby is my idea of a super cool ride.

Am I the only one who thinks much of the Shellby emblems and name tags in many of hismodels as well as the new models are kind of tasteless, look-at-me Vegas, flashy? Just look at the seat sticthing in the super snake - yuck! I much perfer the power of understaded elegence.

Sounds like the car has some issues with the engine. They are right about these cars being scary fast and I have ran a 12.57 quater mile. Not too shabby for a 40 year old original car (except tires). As far as driving, it awful in the turns. That chunk of Cobra Jet seems like its made out of lead.Maybe its just due to the fact that the technology is 40 years old. Still though, itsprobably themost imitatedof all the classics, if not in whole, in part, as you see their influence everywhere. They remain today one of the most desired and collectableclassics. I think I will keep mine for a little while longer.

You have to realize, the GT500's (and post-67 Shelbys in general)were much more luxury cars than the 65-66 GT350's. The KR came with a trim package that includes all that fake woodgrain stuff. However, it also came with a 428CJ which (in running condition) makes it all worthwhile

If you don't like the GT500KR, you may like the standard '68 R code Only about 50 of them made, the rest were turned into the KR's. I've seen rolling shells go for $50k, and a guy on another forum is restoring one.

id agree with you timelock, thereare a lot of cheap tricks in the shelby line.I got the samekind offeeling when i took a ride in a friends cadilac CTS. which suprised me.
its very anoying when somone has to labelthemselves all over the damn car. if its good, it should speak for itself.
