popping exhaust
 

I drove the stang around a little today after adjusting the choke. It started pretty well and I let it warm up a little bit before taking it out. When I was driving and I would floor the gas it would bog and then as it got to about 2200 rpm the exhaust would start popping and stuff, and then it would shift at like 3500 or less!?!?!? Any ideas why those things would be happening?

If you messed with the choke I'd check the plugs. You probably have them fouled.

How can it do that? The choke was set wrong before I adjusted it.

We didn't know how you adjusted the choke. You had just mentioned that you adjusted it. Maybe a plug wire came loose and when you accelerate it moves around. It could be anything, you just have to think that it may be related to the choke if it didn't do it before you adjusted it. Or maybe you bumped something in the process. Keep us posted.

Well I dont think it has to do with the choke cuz I set it back to where it was before I adjusted it and it still popped. Could popping exhaust be an issue of it being timed wrong?

I timed it and it still didnt do anything. For some reason it only pops when I am actually driving it. It doesnt pop at all when I rev it in park or neutral.

Any other ideas or what?

Make sure the vacum advance vaccume hoseis secure on the distributor and not damaged. Thats one thing that could be altered under load conditions.

I am right in the middle of tuning up a 1966 Ford 289 motor that was in a 1965 Mustang I just bought to restore. The enigne was never running right, until today!

I was experiencing rough idle and the popping was there as well. I changed out the wires, plugs, dizzy cap, and rotor and it still was rocking and popping.

Finally today I installed an electronic ignition and removed the old points and condensor setup. WOW! What a difference!

After timing it, adjusting the Edelbrock carb she is running awesome and you cannot hear any popping at all, even at idle.

Not sure if this will help you or not, but this is what got rid of my popping issues.

Check to see if the vacuum advance is working,if its not working it will not run right when you accelerate under a load.If that is not the problem check to see if the points are gapped correctly!Good Luck!:D
