Engine Block Q's
Hi, i have a '68 mustang. I want to put a new engine in it as a project over the summer. I would rebuild the current 302 but then i wouldn't have a car to drive. So Ive decided to buy a block off ebay and build one from the ground up. Im looking at 351 Clevelands, and ive found 2 i like. These are there #s. Can you guys tell me which is the better one to get, and what cars they came in. Ive read and understood what i can, but im an engine newbie, sorry.
1970, 2 bolt main block, DOAE-L , casting date OE22 --- i think this is from a boss? D2AE-CA, 2 bolt with 4 bolt bosses --- what does 4 bolt boss mean? Thanks -JP |

RE: Engine Block Q's
alright, that told me they are both from a Galaxie.
What is a 4 bolt boss? and which of those engines should i get? |
RE: Engine Block Q's
The 4 bolt refers to the 4 bolt mains as opposed to the 2 bolt. Obviously, the 351 Boss 4 bolt is the most desirable engine.

RE: Engine Block Q's
So i guess ill go with the D2AE-CA. As i understand, its a 2 bolt that uses an adapter to make it a 4bolt? Im sorry for being such a newb :(
And X's on it are good, right? High nickel something....? |
RE: Engine Block Q's
The 351 Boss came from the factory with 4 bolt main bearings. There are kits you can add to make it a 4 bolt main. It seems you are talking about the kit, which is OK.

RE: Engine Block Q's
D0AE-L is one of several basic casting numbers for a 70-71 2-bolt block. NOTE: Some Early Boss 351 blocks were of this casting and had the 4-bolt mains. There will be a casting in the back of the block that reads "Z" to determine the block was actually used for a Boss. I have only seen one, but this is a confirmed fact from owners.
D1ZE is your Boss 351 Block. D2AE is the final casting for the cleveland blocks. it came as a 2 bolt OR 4 bolt main.. The latter being a "Q" code car generally but not limited to. Some say that ford popped in a few 2 bolt blocks in the 72-73 "Q" code cars but I have yet to see that. Now, Pantera's were advertised as 4-bolt blocks but many 2-bolts have shown up and this confusion seems to have spread to the mustang world. All Blocks are cast identical, some were just drilled out for 4-bolt mains.. |
