Default How to Determine if My Mustang's Numbers Match

Hi,

I just bought a 1965 mustang coupe with a 200 cid 3 speed manual. I am trying to determine if the parts are original to the car. I found the block casting number which is C5DE 6015-H and I found a bunch of numbers on the transmission, but I don't know what they are. They read C40R (possibly C4DR or C4OR) -7006-A. And below that on the tranny was W-2 D28. The VIN number is 5R07T241035. If anyone could help me decipher these numbers and give me other places to look to check the originality of the car, your help would be much appreciated.

Colleen

The number that you said was the vin was actually the warranty number (at least i believe it should be the same as my 66). there should be 2 numbers on your door dataplate, one is the warranty and one the vin. both would be helpful in determining originality.

I do have the door data plate. Where on the door data plate is it located?

http://www.mustangdecoder.com/decoder.html

visit that website and there is a pic of the data plate. You could also look on the driver fender under the hood for the vin

And where do you find the date code on the engine block? I have read repeatedly about the "date code" needing to be within one month of the production or something but where is the date code?

Ok, I looked under the hood and on the fender was the same number I gave you. However when I checked the door data plate it said that was the warranty number. Can they be the same?

Just because it hasn't been said yet, technically there is no "matching numbers" for these old cars...they didn't do all that back then.

Technically true, but you can pretty well determine if many parts are original by the date caode. If the car was built in May 65 and the date codes of the engine show a mfg date of April 65, more likely than not, it is original to the car.

For these old cars the warranty number is used as the vin, all these cars were all built before the VIN became mandated to the 17 digit system, so now Ford's warranty number is the equivalent to a VIN today.
