Default How do I determine the originality of my 1965 mustang's engine and transmission?

I have heard that in order to tell the originality of the engine and transmission you need to look at the casting numbers. I have found the numbers, but I don't know what they mean in context with what I know about the car. Can anyone give any suggestions on how to decode the numbers or other ways to determine the originality of the engine and transmission to the car? I know the build date is 7th of July 1965, so what should I look for on the engine and transmission.

Colleen

P.S. I have looked and looked for the tag with the date code on the engine block, and I don't beleive it is there. I wasn't sure if there was some other way to find out about the originality.

Start here!

Then visit Amazon or the local library and pick up some Mustang books.

I have but none of the books I have found really help. Do you have any specific books I should look for?

The casting numbers on the block, if its the original numbers matching block, should read, "C5ZE-....." The frist place mean decade with "C" meaning 60s, "D" meaning 70s, etc. The second place which is a number means what year in that decade with this one being "5" meaning 1965 for this code. The 3rd place means what vehicle model it was in and if this is the original motor then it should have "Z" in that place with Z meaning mustang. Different letters are different models. And the last place on the engine code is the part ID which is always "E" because it stands for engine. hope this helps.

here is the easiest way,...........type "ford block casting number" and the number/letters, in a yahoo search, or on google, and it will probably pop up on there. gotta do the research if you really want to know. you dont need a book listing all of them, you might find a list though on someone's webpage, that has all the info you will need, for the next one!

You know i cant remember if its near the oil filter or by the starter but i think youre right about it being next to the starter. Its in one of those corners.
