Default How much horsepower can 302 take?

I have a 1968 Mustang with a rebuilt 71' 3024v engine, all stock. How much horsepower can the stock rods, crank, block, ect..., handle before it self-destructs? I plan on throwing some ported heads and a mean cam in it and just want to make sure it can take the extra h.p. before I go spending my money.

Welcome to the classic Section!!

It is my understanding that a 289/302 block is good to about 450 HP, perhaps another 50 HP with a block girdle.

I think with good pistons, and new aftermarket rod bolts, the rest of the short block should be good to these levels as well.

However, I think you can get new aftermarket rods for about the same price as reconditioning and re-bolting the stock rods. ... Just something to think about.

In any case, since your engine is fresh, I don't think you need to do a thing to the engine for it handle your proposed mods, and then some, without issue, although a "mean cam" may require some head work likescrew in studs, heavy springs, improved rockers, etc.

Ohhh I don't think you'll be anywhere near a self destruction after ported heads and a cam.. Probably be in the low 200's of net horsepower.

The stock blocks are good to around 500-550hp on average if TUNED PROPERLY. Tuning is the key. The stock crank if machined and balanced well will prolly keep up with the block as long as it's not pushed much past 6,500rpm. Stock rods I wouldn't trust much past 350-400hp. Hard to say, I don't know people that push the block's limits on stock rods, so can't say for certain on that one.
