Quarter a little worse than hoped-updated!

RE: Quarter a little worse than I hoped
Had much the same as you and decided to replace with a new full face quarter repair panel and new outer wheelhouse. Repainted black at some point over the original blue. We took this down to the steel to see how bad it was. The flare was repaired at some point with a metal flaked bondo which of course didn't show up with the good old magnet test. There was a puncture which they used a steel mesh to cover and again bondo over that. Since I was buying new floors and torque boxes I'd order the full face replacement as well. I could have patched it I guess but I'd prefer to have it replaced. I plan on welding it in after I get the floors done next week.
Best of luck to you and I hope the bonding agent holds for you. I've seen it fail due to heat expansion and contraction a number of times and don't trust it myself.

RE: Quarter a little worse than I hoped
Adrenolin,
Looks similar but it looks likeyour flare was damaged in the back. The back of mine is fine. Just the forward part was damaged. I still have a fair amount of the flare left, even in the damaged area. I didn't need floors or rails so not much of this car is coming apart. In my case if I replace the quarter I pay someone to do it, considerably more costly. I wanted to keep the quarter also because every panel on this car is original and there is written documentation and receipts for every nut and bolt and quart of oil and whatever which has gone into this car since it was built. Funny thing is, the bondo patch I took out had been in for 18 years and was still fine.

No, I am not crazy, and no I am not replacing the quarter.

I pretty much don't have a choice. The PO hacked up the quarter and did a poor job of putting in a patch panel. It was welded in, I don't understand why anyone would go to the trouble that he did and not replace the whole quarter skin....or at least fix all of the rusted out area on the quarter. Oh well, I did say I wanted to restore a car.

It is kind of strange he put in that big a patch anddid notgo a couple inches higher. And welded too. If I could weld I would probably be doing things differently, but that's another thread.

RE: Quarter a little worse than I hoped
I got the patch bonded in this weekend. I used the Maxim panel bond from Evercoat. Seems OK. I was little worried I did not get enough bond in some of the tighter areas but 24 hours after I put it in I took off the clamps and screws and went at it with a hammer and dolly to do some final shaping. It held up to the work just fine even though some of the hammer blows put a lot of shear pressure on it. There won't have to be much Bondo added. It was a pretty good fit, although I did test fit and trim the thing like20 times. The pictures might be a little mixed up below but they show some of the previous owner's patch after 1/2 - 3/4 inch of bondo was removed,a little ofthe stuff I took out, and couple of photos of the finished bonded patch. The only filler on the patchin these photosis where I filled the holes from the sheet metal screws which secured it while it cured. I learned a couple of things doing this side which I can do to make the other side better.
