Default RE: How do I lower my car?

Like others said lowering coil springs, and mid-eye or reverse eye rear leafs. Alot of people don't recommend using lowering blocks. I needed new leafs, so I bought mid-eyes. The front coils are a no-brainer purchase, because they are so cheap. If you cut the coils start slow (probably 1/4 to 1/2 coil at a time). Keep in mind if you are running wider tires you may want a stiffer spring if you lower so that you run less of a risk of the fender hitting the tires.

Here is some info I wrote up about what I did with my coils.

http://www.fastbackmustang.com/Proje...ngInstall.aspx

Also, I did the Shelby drop. I noticed minimal (to zero) change in ride height from doing this conversion. Most people have said the same thing. It is really a change in the angle of the front upper control arm. Without changing the height of the coil springs it really doesn't affect much as far a height goes.

Hope this helps.

Got to disagree with you on this one.
I noticed a 1/2" (at least) drop from the shelby mod. It did however take about a week for the car to settle down to this level.
This is something to think carefully about when cutting springs. The suspension takes time to settle. Don't simply cut a 1/2 coil off, drop the car off the jack and think its not low enough. Drive it around fo a week, then re assess if you need to cut more. Same with the shelby drop.

My car hasn't settled any noticable amount since I originally cut the coil (although some cars evidently do as much as 1/2"). I agree that it is better to wait and see if the car settles, but mine hasn't changed in 3 years. I did the coils first, then did the Shelby drop about 6 months later when I did my Granada swap. The Granada spindles don't change ride height, and I didn't notice any real ride height change after the drop-n-swap. I have read the same numerous places, but I think it varies slightly by car. I think the biggest misconception is that people think it drops the car 1" which when you think about the geometry change it could affect the height some, but not by the same amount as the UCA is lowered?

One other note on my specific install... I used a wedge kit on mine which will add some more height to the outer edge of the UCA. This would make a slight difference in my experience with the Shelby drop ride height, but affect is minimal at best.

If you are cutting the coils it is best to start slow and work your way up (or down). Once you cut some off a 620, you can practically install it by hand anyway.

On the settling of the front end. Do you guys push down on the front bumper once you get your cars off the jack stands? Because my car settles quite a bit after I do that. If I don't do that it rides a little high in the front for a while till I hit a good bump.

For those cutting springs and test fitting, make sure you do this when test fitting because for me it made quite a bit of difference.

Whew am I out of breath...just blew all my tires back up once I realized Montalvo was kidding.

Seriously, I've spent more $ on my baby due to this site...but thankfully I've saved a lot also due to this site. With the feedback you've all given me I see that while the lowered look has caught on, it's not for everyone...and I'm hardly "jacked up in the back" or "4x4". My car handles great, especially for a 42 year old. I really don't do a lot of corner carving, more straight line stuff. Think I'll upgrade to disc brakes also before I address handling.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

Assuming the front end is tight, do the drop and buy the template from Daze as it makes the job a snap. Put in new shocks. Get a fat swaybar. Put Global West lowering springs in the back with poly bushings. Keep the rest of the money you would have spent on the fancy pants kit in your pocket at least for now, and see how it rides.

Nice looking car.
I take it you don't care for the PST polygraphite kit?
