Question about door handle release on 66 Fastback

Question about door handle release on 66 Fastback
When i bought my car the passenger door would not open with the outside hande,button pushed in but it would not release the door. i took off the door panel today and found the rod hanging loose and free that connects to the button release. there is a little mini grommet that the rod end pushes into which i did and boom,the door works. there is no place for a kotter pin or anything to lock the rod in,it looks like its just suppose to be a snug fit which mine is not anymore,seemed like it would hold,put everything back together and drove to pick my Daughter up from school and the rod slipped out again. my question is should i just put a dab of glue or something on it when i push the rod end in again so it wont slip out again??? any other ideas??
