Default Manual to P/S Conversion

FNG here-

Is there a kit for converting manual steering to power steering in a '67 Mustang with a 6 cylinder engine? If so, where would I get one? Thanks!

I know of no ready made kit for this swap, but the pieces are easy enough to assemble.

You'll need....

PS idler arm
PS pitman arm
PS centerlink
PS control valve
PS ram cylinder
PS frame mounted bracket for locating the end of the ram cylinder
PS hoses (4 total... 2 for the cylinder, one for pump pressure and one for pump return.)
PS pump w/pulley
PS pump mounting bracket

There will be some small parts also required... a new PS belt, some PS fluid, etc.

When all of this is priced out, unless you source the items used from a donor car, you're going to have close to $1k in parts. $1k for a PS system designed in the late 1950's that's barely adequate and prone to leaks? You may want to consider switching to a modern R&P unit. It'll set you back a few more $$'s, but you won't regret it.... the car will steer like an '09 Honda.

Yes, there are kits. Here is one:http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort

1400 for the old style and 1900 for the rack and pinion.

If you're looking for original equipment, Chockostang is your guy. He no longer has a web site, but sells his stuff on ebay. I bought a kit to upgrade my '67 coupe from manual to power steering a year ago. I paid somewhere around $800 for everything, including idler arm, power ram, pump, brackets, hoses, quicker-ratio steering box and pitman arm (everything dave mentioned above was in my kit). The only things I had to buy were a belt, fluid, and a rubber piece that clamps the hoses in place.

Something elseyou'll likely need is water pump and balancer pulleys (they'll need an extra groove for the new belt).Mr Chockley can sell you those also.

I'm sure he'll have stuff for a 6-cylinder Mustang also.

Mr Chockley specializes in original equipment steering and brakes.

His number is 217-882-2083
