Default to stroke or not to stroke...that is the question

i have spent a truck load of $ on the 408 for my GT lately so this is the last thing i need but i find myself forced tomake some engine choices for the mustangas the current motor is dying.

a while back i posted about oil being sucked up via the pcv. I was adamant this was some sort of vacuum issue. turns out its blow by and its getting worse.

So, i want strength and reliability - i wont do a cheapy build but there will be limits. I dont need huge hp/tq (i have the 408 for that) but i do want it to be spirited. Its got to be versatile but not complain when i demand 6-6500 just because sometimes a ford small block has to be heard properly. Are you with me so far?

Current engine is a302 roller block thats never been rebuilt and i also have an older 302 block(1970/71) never rebuilt.

Do i build
1) a 302
2) a 347
3) a 331
4) some other 302 derivative?

A shorter stroke revs faster. I'd go with a 302.

theroy would dictate such but I've built some pretty decent 306's, the last being an 11 to 1 compression motor and although it was bad !! it ain't got nothin on my 347 and I reused cam from it and heads and intake and carb and my 347 out revs the snot and twice as fast as the 306 did........the 347 litterally screams vs the high compression 306......306 ran 12.20 @ 111 and 347 with wheel spin ran 11.79 @ 117

Compromise is in order........ go with a 331, roller, good (not "the best") alum heads, a stout bottom with a girdle.... and drive the hell out of it....

I agree. I built a 331 and I love it. It revs just fine up to 6k+, has plenty of torque, and is perfectly reliable.

289[8D]

actually a 10:1'ish 331 would be a great motor with some GT40 heads that had some mild work done to them, and a nice streetable (yet ballsy) cam.

humm howabout a 331 low compression kit from scat, i think we all know were i'm going with this, now i know for a fact that its not that hard to find a turbo, go find a wrecked backhoe, or anything with a cummins 4B diesel motor, and get you a holeset adjustable waste gate (from 7 all the WAY UP TO 60!!!!!!!!! psi)
