"New" '69 Mach 1 - Where to Start?

RE: "New" '
That's quite the amazing car right there. If you do plan to drive it (I hope you do, these things were meant to be driven) you may want to look into having the engine updated/rebuilt with hardened seats. The reason for this is because today's unleaded fuels don't have the lead the fuel did when that car was built. You can get away with using unleaded for a while, but it will eventually cause problems, alternately head to an auto store and get some lead substitute. I personally think this is a perfectly fine thing to have done, even with respect to keeping the car all original.
On that note, please do keep it original. If you change anything, try and keep it to originally available parts, and keep everything you take off. What you have is a very rare car in that condition, keep it that way and it will do good to you later down the road.
I definitely agree with 4reboy on the Marti report. Go for the middle one, that's $46 I believe, it will give you all the original options and equipment of the car and some production numbers.
And finally yes, if you can keep it garaged that's wonderful, if for now you cant, then at least get a nice car cover- californiacarcovers.com has all sorts depending on the conditions it will be stored and they are custom fit. Otherwise, they can be store outside (mine is, and it's done fine for years) just be sure you've got insurance on it as everyone said.
Oh one more thing, please take some more pictures of the engine and interior and post those, we'd all love to see it.

Ok, finally, some inside the car pics. Rick pulled it out of the garage this afternoon and washed it. Looks better than the original pics. HOWEVER, it's my job to clean the inside up and I didn't get to it. Work, supper, laundry . . . .
Here are the pics. Thanks again for all your advice!!

RE: "New" '69 Mach 1 - Where to Start?
Beautiful car. Everything that has been posted about saftey would be my first concern. Looks and a painted motor won't do you any good in a ditch! As far as trailering and all that. Can you enjoy it if you don't at least drive it some. I am not saying take a cross country, but driving and enjoying it is what it is all about, otherwise your grandkids just sell your rare car. I would, and this is me, drive it around make a schedule of items that you want to replace, and do the most important safety ones first. If you take it apart make sure it doesn't become one of those I'll get to it items have the parts you want to replace on hand first. I got my car because some one took it apart 19 years ago and never got to it!!

RE: "New" '69 Mach 1 - Where to Start?
Brenda/Rick,
The wear and tear visible in the photos is not consistant with an 18,000 mile car. Either the car has 118,000 (or 218,000) miles on it.... or it was heavily abused during it's short time on the road.
This doesn't mean anything (other than it's not a low mileage car).
The car is still very nice and highly collectable.
Dave
It only has a little over 18,000 miles on it now.

RE: "New" '69 Mach 1 - Where to Start?
I agree with everyones post here. Beautiful car first off. Second do the safety stuff first, that's why my mustang is still at the shop. I don't want to drive it till I can feel safe for me and everyone else on the road. Second I would drive it at least on the weekends on short trips. Lastly, once it's safe or everything checks out make a list of what you want to do to make it look new. I'd keep a car in that condition original and enjoy it at car shows and such. Lastly look for a local mustang club to talk to other mustang fanatics . This is part of owning a classic and a mustang.
Great car enjoy it when you can.
