Default bolt keeps coming out between backing plate and caliper

bolt keeps coming out between backing plate and caliper

I have a 67 GTA with front disc brakes. Several times now the bolt on the inside bottom has come out. It is not an issue (that I notice) until I go into reverse and it locks the wheel.

What do I need to do to get the bolt to stay? I see threading on the caliper side but the backing plate appears to be smooth (did it have threading before that is now gone?).

A buddy told me to try like a heli coil but it looks like this area is like an inch there were the backing plate is. AND I can't put a nut on the other side as that is where the caliper is. I hope I don't have to replace the whole backing plate.

Any ideas?

Been a while since I've looked at my own, but it sounds like you're talking about one of the bolts that holds the backing plate on? If so, blue loc-tite the thing in. Should solve your problem.

It's the bolt that goes through the backing plate into the caliper. Holds the caliper in place.

Should the backing plate have threading? Seems like it should and I am wondering if loc tite will be enough to hold it. The caliper still has threading.

Assuming you have the 4 piston caliper used on '67's the caliper is not threaded the mounting plate is. You need a new mounting plate. On some model, Ford actually safety wired these bolts. The head of the bolt would have a hole in it. A thin steel wire went through the head of each bolt then wrapped around itself to keep the bolts from turning. The threads should have thread locker on them in any case.

I do have a 4 piston caliper. And it is definitely threaded.

I was wrong, the caliper is closest to me as I thread the bolt (away from center of the car toward the rotor and wheel).

After getting a new bolt and trying it, there is some thread on the mounting plate.

What I guess I need to figure out is do I try the hela coil on that mounting plate or try and replace the mounting plate. Not sure what is the best or the easiest.

I don't know where to buy that plate if I wanted to go that route. I don't see it on any of the sites online. And I bet replacing it is a bear.

But I am afraid with the hela coil, I may spend $50 on the kit, possibly break it putting it in and best case have a not as good solution.

Kind of stuck at the moment.
