67mustang302, unfortunately, unlike the 67 models, the 71-73 models do not have a removable cross member, so thats in the way. Now... with a stock engine and stock pan, you can get it off if you undo the mounts, jack the engine up and put wood under the mounts, and set it back down on the wood. However, my 347 has a main stud girdle and a windage tray, and the pan has a baffle that basically require the pan to drop straight down instead of coming off at a forward angle. I would love to pull the pan to fix it, but it just isn't gonna happen because I really don't want to pull the engine. Well the JB weld is on it now, and they recommend using a small heat lamp in cold weather to help it cure, so I did that just a few minutes ago. In the morning, if it's cure, Ill sand it a little bit to smooth it up and then throw a coat of paint over it. Oh... by the way... The fumes did kinda go poof! But I had pulled the breather out and it was no big deal, just sounded like a lot of air suddenly blowing out of the engine. But, so certain poeple don't call me an idiot again, I would like to reiterate that every safety precaution was taken, and there was no serious danger in what was being done.

That sucks. With my girdle and windage tray I can barely get my pan off with the engine in the car, but if the cross member didn't come out it would be impossible. I see your dilemma. I wouldn't want to pull the engine either, haha. And yeah, vapor burning out an opening of a closed vessel tends to sound like wind blowing through a canyon. But, once it consumes the oxygen there's not much else it can do. And no matter how long you ventilate something like that, or a gas tank, or large oil field vessels, there's always the risk when you weld on it. But yeah, as long as you take precautions you should be ok.

Maybe if the JB weld doesn't work you could try mighty putty? Hahaha!

Hey Glen, go check your Inbox. I sent you a PM.

i met up with tyler today and he has no leaks. he also has a very clean 72, and his 347 is spot on. no valvetrain noise, no flat spots when you get on it, and it has gobs of power. i have to say i was definately impressed.

Hey, you know the rules, no picture, it didn't happen!

Come on post a picture of that 347 wasting some tires with the two of you giving Tiger65 the old bird salute!

Glad to hear you got it fixed.
