Our Outdoor Paint Booth

Thought this might be an option for others to think about after sanding all winter on your car. Click on my weblink below for pictures, lessons learned, ideas and safety tips

We tried to find a shop that would rent out a booth for weekend use but none were available. We were told that whatever we do in the booth, the shop was responsible for and EPA fines are expensive.

The Garage is so jammed with stuff that it was not an option. We did have a large backyard and side access. We purchased a Harbor Freight car canopy on sale for $150 that can be staked down for the wind. It also weighs 130 lbs. We then covered the sides and floor with Visqueen 6 mil plastic sheeting and duct taped it down to the top. One end was left open for access and to move parts through and closed up with bungee ties around the down tubes.

Two 20-inch provided ventilation box fans PUSHING AIR IN. These fans are not explosion proof and you do not want any VOC going through them.

The exhaust has 6 filters measuring 24x24. The fans will vent out the booth in a few minutes and over spray was not really an issue. There was no over spray anywhere near the exhaust filters on the outside!

There was not too much dust inside. It has plenty of room for parts and the car.

thats cool

how long did it take to set up?

chris66dad 12-05-2008 01:28 PM

Chris and I put it all up in 1/2 of a day including fans, visqueen, taping and filters. We used plastic duct tape and it stuck much better than the cloth duct tape.
It did get warm during mid day during late summer so we used this "feature" to help "bake" the paint. :)
Used 2 air compressors (110V) tied together before the water trap and never ran out of air. Gun needed 10 CFM...

Thats a very good idea. I have used something "VERY" much like that in the past and it worked very well. Theres no substitute for natural light and what you can see in a poly booth is exactly what you get.

Yes even professional lights made for in commercial paint booths can throw you off, especially when blending

Great post. You seem to find the worlds most creative people on mustangforums.

Very impressive, thanks for sharing

That is great. I had been thinking along similar lines for painting my car. Your success along with evil elanour's provides much inspiration that I can get this done myself.

It is something most people can do if they want to!
But the devil is in the details and you need to make sure the body work is right. I have 1 spot that is really bugging me that was not done right. It jumps out at me everytime I look at the car even though most people dont see it.
I found a painting/body forum where pro and semi pro painters hang out. They will answer all your questions. Search the HUGE knowledge base first before asking. More than likely your question has been asked before. Some of the old timers get tired of answering the same question 100 times. LOL
Check it out if interested: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/body-exterior/
Can not stress enough taking your time and not rushing! And above all, SAFETY FIRST!
Good luck!
Ron
