Windage tray - do you use one???
 

Was considering if I should get a windage tray. Thoughts? Who uses them and who doesn't? Any issues by not using one?

Not to hi-jack but extend here.. I've been wondering this myself. Our 351w will be built up quite a bit over stock and I'm not sure if this is something I really need or not. Is it really something that needs to be installed in a DD?

I know what they do but when should and when shouldn't one be used?

if you have the money to spend you should buy one it will help out on the street too ;)

Does any machining need to be done? I know our 1979 block didn't originally have one and I'm not quite sure how/where they get bolted in. I'm using the original crank and piston arms but upgrading to ARP bolts.

They don't cost much really at maybe 120.00 for the bolts and tray at the top end.

Make one and weld it is, its not complicated. Also run an oil cooler too.

you use a stud kit for 2 of the mains instead of bolts.

I recommend them for any vehicle with any kind of performance mods. A crank scraper is not a bad idea either. The crank starts to pick up oil at less than 2000 rpm. Both the weight of the oil on the crank and aeration of the oil can cause problems.

My engine came out of a '93 GT and didn't have one stock which is why I am leaning towards not installing one. I would have to imagine it can't be that big of a deal if they weren't installed in the 90's?? Maybe I am wrong.

i used one, picked it up from ford racing and had to cut it down to fit the oil pan in my II. i did it for piece of mind while revving high since i plan to beat the ever living crap out of any motor i put in my pony :D

they arent installed because its an added expense. ford is in the business of making as much as possible.
