wheels, tires, axles.
Hey guys,
Ive recently started looking into new wheels and tires for my 65 coupe, but im concerned. Did all mustangs up till the mid 70s come with the 4 lug pattern, or did only the 6 cylinder mustangs come with the 4 lug and the v8 get the 5 lug? (Id just go look but ive got it parked in my garage back home and im at college) Also, if its the 5 lug then i need 5 x 4.5 lug pattern correct?
Once ive got the lug pattern figured out ive got to get the other dimensions down. I know 15" is the standard rim diameter, but have any of you gone 16"? Are there performance implications? Does it limit my range of tires? Id like to get a 16" rim, but id be happy with a 15" if it meant id have an easier time going about this whole process.
Finally, what size tires do you guys generally run? I want to get a nice wide tire for the back, but i dont know what i can fit in there with all the other stock components. In fact, an all around bigger tire would be nice (taller / wider than stock) - something to fill up the wheel well a bit more. But then this leaves me with the dilemma of the front tire. I dont want a skinny tire like ive seen on lots of the older mustangs and camaros, i want something almost the same size as the rear tire. Maybe not as wide, i just dont want it to look too disproportional.
Any thoughts or pictures or anything you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

The backspacing (bs) on the rims you choose is what will place the tire the correct depth in the wheelwell, can't say for sure for '66 but '67 requires 4"-4.25" for best fit with 15" wheels. I believe the issue with 16" is that the rim may contact the UCA lip by the ball joint if it's the wrong bs. I think 215 is the max width for a front tire before you start rubbing the fender lips and while turning. I use 225's on my '67 but rolled the fender lips.
