Friend's '66
 

Ok, so a couple of my friends and I were hangin out tonight, smoking some tires and stuff. One of my buddys has a 1966 Mustang w/ a 289. It has Magnaflow exhaust and his newest install is a 6 pack. He has an edelbrock manifold w/ three 2 barrel carbs. The problem is that when ever he gets on it, then lets off the gas, it puffs out black smoke. This has never happened before. Is this too much for his stock heads and cam?

It shouldn't be if tuned correctly and the linkages are done right. the car runs on the middle 2 for 90% of the time, and should progressively kick in the other 4 as it get on up there in rpms. sounds like it's dumping too much fuel

I have to say that yes, it is too much carb for a stock setup. But I do agree with James, it should work alright as long as its tuned right.

However, multiple carb setups aren't vacuum or airflow operated, they're operated by linkages. A good linkage setup will progressively open the front and rear carbs up more as you step on the gas. When he quickly floors the pedal, he opens up all three carbs and dumps a lot of fuel in, more than that engine will need.

Ok thanks guys, I told him his engine probably didnt need that much fuel all at once, and I think he is adjusting his linkage today. He is in the process of getting some AFR heads and custom grind cam, so maybe that will take care of some things.

Where does this guy get his income? I wish I could afford a 6 pack, AFR heads, and a custom cam...

Well to be honest with you, his parents are loaded. He doesn't act like it though. He does work for his stuff to fix his car up. His parents just cover everything else. He got the stang for 7 grand and painted it and rebuilt the motor. Now he has saved up for the engine parts.

A six pack is high on the cool factor, but low on the performance factor. A properly tuned four barrel will beat it everytime.

Don't you get better gas mileage with the one 2 barrel if you drive it easier though?

So, were you smoking tires or stuff? What kind of stuff?

If gas mileage is your objective, you need to go a whole diferent way. If you stay out of the secondaries on a 4 barrel, you will rival the 2 barrel. The biggest issue on a 6 pack after you conquer the linkage is fuel atomization and distribution. The manifold runner configuration is just not efficient.
