Question concerning 66' with Top Loader tranny..
I am a frequent visitor to the 5.0 mustang forums, but am new here. This is concerning a 1966 mustang with a 289 and a 4 speed top loader tranny that a friend of mine is building. He is computer illiterate so he asked me to post for him. Well first off, he did a cam swap not to long ago and didn't use any zddp additive and ruined his camshaft, lifters, and maybe hurt the block... So now he is considering a fordstrokers.com 347 engine to drop in the 66'.. So here's the question.. Would he have to change anything about the fly-wheel & clutch steup to get the newer style engine to work with the top loader? Or could he use his same fly-wheel & clutch? We are trying to figure out everything he would need for the swap...
Thanks, Richard

As you probably know, there are three different balance flywheels for a 302 base block (50, 28, and 0oz). You will need a flywheel balance that matches the rotating assembly. As for the clutch and pressure plate, you will need either a long style or diaphragm pressure plate. There are a ton of options out there, but I recommend McLeod. Give them a call and tell them what you have (302, xxoz balanced, toploader 4 speed). They will happily give you a parts list for the right flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate.
