Default Rev Limiting My 302

Newbie to engine work, so bear with me.

Besides using my ear and feel (my car is tachless at the moment), is there a way to limit how far I can rev the engine?

Maybe I can tweak my linkage lengths so that the pedal can only move the carb so far. But is there a "standard" way to do this?

Thanks.

Some older cars had a throttle stop on it as a forum of a rev limiter.

not using the carb linkage. when you rework the linkage the only thing you do is to castrate your carb. not what you want. wouldn't even be possible. even when you adjust the linkage that floor down is only 3/4 throttle open you'd manage to over-rev that thing

the only way of doing this properly is via ignition. You need a box that knows your rpms and just switches off ignition once you are over and back on when under
as simple as

i don't know if there's any plug-in thingies, but most of the mallory or MSD boxes have a built in rev limiter if you were thinking about upgrading anyway.

I have an older mallory box that I'm not using with the new engine (came with new engine) as it's incompatible with rally pac tach. so either I'm investing 100 odd dollars for a module that would sort me out or selling the box and distributor. I'm undecided ... :-#

I agree with Kalli. The only firm rev limit I know of requires electronic ignition. If you are running points, I think you are out of luck. The ol' governor screw on the fast pedal is pretty ghetto and really only limits your throttle opening thus limiting your horsepower. That is not really a rev limiter.

i'm still quite sure there would be a box that you'd attach to the coil that could measure rpms and just switch off coil if over. no matter if points or not.
again: there might be, as it can't be too hard to fabricate. But yes electronic ignition box is easier as a lot of them have rev limiter included.
Since you don't have a tach, why not start with that ? :-)

The MSD A6L is an expensive option but bullet proof and you get the added benefits of modern ignition...however I doubt this is what you're after.

Thanks all.

I will be updating to a modern ignition at some point, maybe next spring. So I will seriously look into a model with a limiter.

Yeah, time for a tach. The old girl made it 45 years without one.... then again, from what I understand, she is also on her 3rd engine.
