1966 Mustang leaf spring lift!
#15
This suspension combo easily supports low 12s with the addition of traction bars of some sort (like under riders) and drag radials that fit under the fenders of the car...if you have a motor with enough horsepower to run 12s anyway:
To put it another way I don't think the suspension you have on the car right now is a limiting factor preventing you from having good consistent times with your car. I suspect you think you need to lift it 4 inches because you want to slap some super wide tires on it because you think you need them to drag race...you don't. I've run 11.5 on 5 leaf mid eyes and 275 40 17 drag radials.

As far as the original post, I don't know why anyone would need to lift the rear 4 inches.

thanks for all the posts guys, I appreciate it.
This is over emphasized, but that's the sort of thing I mean.
I don't want it this high, but with my 7" wide wheels in the back, I get no grip. So I thought if I exaggerated the stance a bit, it wouldn't look so retarded with the wheels sticking out past the fenders
anything more than 7" wheels will come past the fenders as my car is now

I'm pretty inexperienced with wheels and backspacing
could you explain it? My wheels now are 3.75" backspace, 7" wide, 15" diameter, and they are almost flush with the fenders. I've got Michelin HydroEdge 205/65/15
I want 10" wheels, and I'm ok with flaring the fenders a bit, but I don't know what backspace to get

Yeesh, no wonder you have no traction. Those tires are some of the hardest on the market.
Your wheels have the wrong backspacing for your car. Proper backspacing for a 15x7 wheel on a 65-66 car is 4.25".
10" wheels aren't going to fit under your car without serious modifications. 8" is about the max on the early cars without switching to coilovers. 8" is plenty wide for your car, especially if you get some decent tires on it. You'll probably have to roll the fenders though, and you'll probably still have rub issues in the front with anything more than a 215 tire.

Is that backspacing correct for front and rear?
And what tires would you recommend that grip better? I do need them to be all-season, I live in rainy Seattle
