Question 17" wheels - is this backspacing acceptable?

  • 17x8 (4.5" BS) w/ 245/40/17 or 235/40/17
  • 17x9 (6.0" BS) w/ 265/40/17
I'm going to pick up some 17" AR wheels for my 68 fastback in the sizes above. They do not offer custom offset for these particular wheels. Is anyone running a similar size / BS? What size tires do you have and are there any issues with tire rub? Photos would be appreciated. Thanks!

Front should be good. Back you may have to cut the piece off circled in orange in the picture on both sides to make them fit. The piece I am talking about is the piece of metal that is sticking out toward the side of the mustang. You should be able to leave the rubber piece there.

I've got a 67 fastback....

American Racing 605MS765C on the front, 17x8 w/4.5" backspace
Tires up front: 245 45 17 BFGs KDWs

American Racing 605MS7965C on the back, 17x9 w/6.0" backspace
Tires out back: 275 40 17 BFGs KDWs

Yes, you will need to trim the metal piece shown in the previous post. Not the whole thing, but just enough for a confortable clearance.

I took a few pictures (tonight) but can't see how to post them. If I can figure it out, I will post them, otherwise, give me your email address and I'll send them along. (they were taken at night, in the garage, but it will give you an idea.)

With the car on a rack and the rear tires removed, can this piece easily be cut on both sides?

I believe it would be easy to cut with the tires off.
