ya just have to be careful about the break in and the oils you use. I don't see any point in converting to rollers with that spider if it's not a roller block.
as for the cam. if I hadn't got the rpm cam from edelbrock I probably would have thrown a 268 comp cams in there.
but there's no way to tell without knowing the rest of your setup. better open a new thread for that as otherwise this one gets confusing ....

Flat tappet cams are pointless these days, unless you're trying to cheap out. Roller cams have no wear issues, get better mileage, make more power, have better street manners, better idle vacuum, and radically increase VE over flat tappet cams within the same rpm range. That's the reason the manufacturers moved away from flat tappet cams over 25 years go. The slightly increased cost over a flat tappet cam, even if you have to buy retrofit lifters, is more than made up for in engine performance. That and you don't have to worry about doing a voodoo rain dance during engine break in.
