4-point Safety Harness Selection
 

I am looking to improve the safety of my 67 Fastback and upgrade to a pair of Procar Rally seats along with some better safety belts. My car is currently equipped a this roll bar.

I ran across these two types of 4-point belts on Summit and was wondering if they would work? I was kind of leaning to something more simple with a buckle like the second ones as this car will not be tracked and just used for the street. Any suggestions?

There is two problems one you need to add a harness bar to your cage and most 4 points are not dot approved which means illegal to use.If your not going to race it at all get a 3 point its safe and street legal.

Shcroth Racing 4pnts, as was mentioned, that's what I'm running. It's about the only 4pnt that won't kill you in a wreck, and the only harness that's DOT approved.

Several reasons, first being they are the ONLY DOT approved harness out there, secondly they run ASM(Anti Sub-Marine) technology so in a collision you don't submarine under the lap belt and rip your guts up, and third you can get the Rallye 4 like I got, and the shoulder straps are mounted via tail straps to the rear seat lap belt anchor points(this requires a seat with a strong back that has through holes for the shoulder strap so you don't get spinal compression in a wreck).

If you want to spend a little more you can get the Autocontrol series with the adapter strap extension, and mount it to one of the rear lap belt anchor points. It uses a g sensor and an electronically controlled inertia reel so you can lean around in the cabin like a normal seat belt, but it locks up under braking or in a collision.

And not all 3 pnts are safe, some of the conversions I've seen for our cars are downright dangerous, since there's no way to keep the shoulder strap located in a collision, so you'd just slip out.

Mounting the anchor that far back will crush your spin in a roll over.Only safe way to mount the shoulder straps is a harness bar.Hes not racing it a 4 point is over kill besides hitting your head on that cage in a wreck will mess you up no matter what seat belts you have.

Thanks for all the input. I will not be racing or tracking this car. I was just thinking using the installed roll bar to mount the belts would be simplest and safest option. I am going with the Scat Rally seats that have headrests but not the openings for the belts to pass through. I would much rather go with something like a simple 3-point retractable belt with a Chrome buckle if it is safer. Where would you recommend to mount the top point? Bolted into the rollbar?

If you go 3 point depends a lot on how you can mount the top piece.If you go 4 point up the harness bar is the best bet.Either way read the directions make sure its safe.You could look at different seats or just have the shoulder straps over the top of the seat.I got a 5 point in mine but use my lap belt the most.

I am really just looking for a safer option than the factory seats and lap belt combination. I will probably purchase the Rally Seats first before installing any seatbelts to see what my mounting options are. From there I will figure out if its better to go with a 3-point or install a harness bar and go for the 4 point system.

No, not if you use the right seat anyway. That's how these harnesses are designed, tested and APPROVED(through crash dummy testing) by the DOT. The opening the shoulder belts come through(either through holes on a sport seat, or between 2 head rest posts) need to be ABOVE your shoulder level, so the seat back takes the compression, rather than your spine. If you use the wrong seat, then yeah, your spine can get fubar'd.

But there is a limit on how far back you can mount the anchor and the angle should be no more then 20 degrees.Trust me i have build a few race cars tech is anal about the shoulder anchor.
