Default New Manifold and Carb on a 66 289

Hey all, Im new to the forum and just have a couple of questions. I have several vacuum leaks, and ignition problems isolated in the Dizzy. I have the origional stock 289 manifold, with the autolite 2100. Its been rebuilt several times ( by myself) and I fear that it may need pro service. My problem is right now I cant afford a mechanic to do all the work involved. This leads me to my Questions...

1. Whats a good, inexpensive edelbrock 4bbl for the 289?
2. Is the Ignitor a good choice to go with instead of rebuilding the dizzy?

Any feedback is appreciated. I chose edelbrock because i personaly feel edelbrocks are more reliable and thats what Im going for, not HP

With a stock 289 you need the lowest series carburetors (Performer) in a 500 or 600 cfm. Don't forget the intake manifold to match.

I always thought that rebuilding a distributor involved replacing the bearings. The ignitor kit won't do that for you.

Hiya,

Since you have an autolite 2100, you have 2barrel intake and carb.
You might find a good 2barrel for it, ot just move over to a 4barrell setup like this:

4barrell carb: If you want new the best bang for the buck is probably the Summit 600cfm.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-M08600VS/

if you have to have edelbrock, i think the cheapest (500cfm) with electric choke is:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-9903/

for the intake use either the weiand 8124 or the edelbrock performer
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WND-8124/
or
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-2121/
check out suggested parts, as you will need the gaskets as well.

check on the water temperature sensor you currently have in the intake, what size is that (there's the thing and thick ones). The new intakes will use the thick ones. I can't remember what stock intake uses. Worst case just order both

The distributor:
in a stock distributor there's not much that actually can go wrong:
- the points are worn -> replace with condensor or upgrade to pertronix module
- the humps are worn which open the points ->upgrade to pertronix module
- the shaft has play (you can move the shaft forward and backward) -> I would trash the distributor and replace with aftermarket
- the bearing is a bit dry. a few _drops_ of oil right into the middle of the shaft
- the springs are worn or rusted->replace and lightly oil the weights
- the vacuum advance diaphragm is not holding vacuum (suck at hose connected to vacuum canister. it needs to hold the vacuum. if you can suck air through it it's gone) ->replace the vacuum canister
- the advance curve needs adjusting (probably in any case)

Generally you can't set ignition properly with vacuum leaks and you can't adjust a carb when the carb is not doing it's job.

So where exactly do you have the vacuum leaks and can you check onj whats wrong with the distributor? maybe just adjust the points and timing and see what happens ?)

For your carb and intake setup, may I suggest a Holley Street Avenger 570 and an Edelbrock Performer manifold. I've run both the Edelbrock 600 and the Holley 570 on my 289 and had far better performance with the Holley, but had to jet it down to get the a/f ratio's correct.

Thanks for all the suggestions! When I said I needed to rebuild the dizzy, i realy meant that the points and condenser and vacume advance , along with the ignition coil needed to be swapped. Like I said Im not big on performance at this point, Im just going for more reliability. Im not sure where the leaks are but I know they are there. The engine was built in early 65 and has the older smaller temp sensor.I have been meaning to make the switch to a 4bbl for a while and I know some people who vend Edelbrock and can get some good deals through them. Do you think I should go with a re-manufactured one? Does it make a difference you think?

Id just thought Id add that the car isnt running at the moment due to all the ignition problems and leaks. It wont even start unless there is constant pressure on the gas pedal

i'd suggest pertronix module for the distributor to see how that's going and for the carb.
if you need cheap and brand new, go with the summit 600cfm, if you want edelbrock (i wouldn't really mind buying reman) go with that

but yes, the performer intake with a 570 holley street avenger is a great combination, just more costly.
I had weiand 8124 with the holley 570 street avenger for a while. was running great for an otherwise stock 289.

^^^2nd. got the weiand action plus and a 570cfm street avenger. easy install and good power thru the range. u will probably have to change out the jets however to get optimal fuel/air ratio. I went +2 on the primaries and -2 on the 2nds but also kinda depends on your car. changing the jets takes just a couple mins too
