Default Switching back to manual

Ok so my buddy got a 68 mustang and found out it was originally a manual (manual pedals still in the car and C4 doesn't have kickdown or neutral safety are some pointers). All decoding info is gone except the vin which can't help.

How can we be sure that it was a stick? does the floor look any different where the shifter goes?

Either way he wants it manual, so what would be more correct? a 3 speed or 4 speed in a 302 4V.

like i said the pedal assembly and rod that goes through the firewall are still in place. what all entails the swap back? of course the tranny, but what about crossmember, bellhousing (can the c4 bellhosing work?), driveshaft, etc. thanks.

The factory-punched hole for the upper clutch rod will be a dead giveaway.

Nope- Same hole.

If the car is a J code 4V, it was pretty likely to be a 4-speed. Get a Marti report and you'll know everything there is to know about the car.

like i said the pedal assembly and rod that goes through the firewall are still in place. what all entails the swap back?
Bellhousing, trans and shifter, reverse light switch w/starter bypass, speedo cable if it's a 4-speed, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch assembly with pilot and release bearing, release lever and boot, lower pushrod, pushrod spring, equalizer, equalizer engine and frame pivots with bushings and seals, upper spring, upper pushrod and seal.

of course the tranny, but what about crossmember,
C4 & smallblock 3-speed/4-speed used the same crossmember.

bellhousing (can the c4 bellhosing work?)
Not even close.

, driveshaft
Probably the one you have will be fine.

i think this covers everything minus the trans and bellhousing and shifter. those we will have to hunt down. wished we started sooner seeing how we coulda got stuff from carlisle. thanks for the info.

p.s. further inspection showed a cut reverse light harness (definitely 4 speed) and original punched hole in the firewall. thanks. whether it was 3 or 4 speed we don't really care at this point. it will never have its original drivetrain so we will go 4 speed to keep the older feel if you know what i mean.

another interesting thing, did the manual mustangs have 9" rears? if not someone put one in.
