The ignition switch found inside the steering column has giving up the ghost. It came apart. To my amazment I find the part is obsolete and not reproduced. (Because like many 70 parts, they only made them one year). I can get a 71-73 ignition switch however, it doesn't have the same connector. I am thinking of swapping out my connector with the 71-73 connector. Has anyone else gone through this? if so, could you give me any insight as to what you did? Thanks. BTW, if anyone has a parts car they are currently selling parts I'd be interested in the ignition switch and a nice fan shroud? 351 W 2V.

Standard Products was the last source of this switch. You'll need to haunt eBay for a used or NOS one. Bring money. I eBayed a used one for $75 three years ago. You can't use the 71 switch. It's a mirror image, and cannot be installed. Carpenter and Drake have made noises about reproducing this switch, but nothing has come of it. I suggest to email them and encourage them to make this part.

I don't believe the 71-73 switches are a mirror image. I cut and spliced my old connector onto a new later model switch. Just stagger your splices so it doesn't make a big lump. Here's some additional info.

i found a ford oem one on ebay for my 70, while waiting for it i found one back east, they were both $90.00. but yeah they still make a reproduction one. you just have to search for it.

You are correct. The new available switch for the 71-73 is the exact same switch except for the plug connection. I solved my problem by purchasing an entire steering column that included the turn signal switch, key and cylinder (along with the matching door key cylinders),and the ignition switch. The column came fromn a 1970 Cougar. I paid $100 plus $16 shipping. Part arrived from Chicago in two days. Part is installed and the Mach 1 is back on the road. So I believe I made out very well considering most want more then the $100 for just the switch. BTW, before I found the column I bought the 71-73 switch through Rock Auto. Part arrived today, and it is made exactly the same except for the plug connector as I originally posted. Thanks to everyone who replied to my original post. You all were extremely helpful.

hi my name is jacob i have a 1970 ford mustang mach 1 with 351c and my ignition switch is bad well not the switch really just theres a break inside one of the wires i would like o buy one either new or used but if not wat could i do to the old one should i just replace the wires and be one or what should i do ive looked on ebay for a new or used one and i found a few nos one and they wanted almost 300 bucks for it so im just seiong what you guys think i should do since this conector was only used one year. so if you could give me some advice that would be great thank you and have a nice day.
