1965 fast back with major rust
#281
I guess I'd work on anything if given the opportunity. It keeps me busy till I find work some day. That Mustang I did was probably one of the newest cars I've done. I guess I usually work on the older stuff that you can't buy parts for. Don't really like to do the same thing twice.

Wadda' ya' wanna see? How about front fender patch with a wired edge?
[IMG][/IMG]
Or a rear pan for a boat tail. A lot going on here but not much shape, wired edge, beads, etc.
[IMG][/IMG]
another view....
[IMG][/IMG]
Or the front of a rear fender, same car...
[IMG][/IMG]
Or how about a fender skirt?
Any suggestions?.........Anyone?

Ok, fender it is. I did this project a while ago. So any pictures I have are all I have, I can't go back and take more. It is what it is.
Real quick, this car is pretty rare and since I had it in my garage I decided I wanted one. Since I don't have money I copied some of the more "boat tale" specific pieces.
Like this rear pan....

Notice the other pan in the back ground....

Ok, on to the front fender. This was upside down in a field for who knows how long. So it rusted out from the inside, and at the top. Hope that makes sence. Because this is such a rare car I'm trying to repair as much as I can, not just remake everything. I want it to still be what it is. Not all new.
So first, identify where the good metal starts. Make a pattern and cut out a blank. I know some guys make the blank over sized but I try not to over do it. I like the blank to be close, just a little big, not much. That's the new patch/blank, next to the fender.
[IMG][/IMG]
Notice all the transitions of radii and flats are marked out, as well as where the wire will go.

So then I shaped the part. Fairly heavy shrinks around the outside. Stay off the side, it should stay flat and straight.
[IMG][/IMG]
After checking and double checking to the pattern the blank was finally pretty close.
[IMG][/IMG]
With the shape about right, I formed up the part to see if it would fit.
[IMG][/IMG]
It was over shrunk a bit. So I stretched it back out where it needed to be and checked fit again. Then traced out the new piece on the old fender and got to cutting.

The original wire only needed some minor fixing for it to be good. I think you can see it there in the pics.
And yes, those are wooden wheels.
[IMG][/IMG]
Then just weld it in.
[IMG][/IMG]
A heavy coat of primer, maybe some filler and it's done. Also because it's TIGed it looks the same on the inside as it does on the outside.
[IMG][/IMG]
Pretty straight forward.
I like the design of this car. Simple, not a bunch of beads or decorations.
