Default Rookie questions 1968 289 - oil and plugs

1) Oil recommendation 1968 - 289 automatic?
Brand/weight/synthetic vs regular?

2) regular spark plugs vs platinum?

Have a '68 convertible mustang 289 automatic. Want to get it running after 5+ years in storage. Would appreciate any suggestions on where to start/what to do first.

First thing, change ALL of the fluids. Coolant as well as oil. You may have to flush the cooling system pretty well to get all of the accumulated crap out of it.

For oil, I recommend something with lots of zinc. Modern oils don't have enough zinc in them to protect your flat tappet cam lobes and lifters. Valvoline VR-1 is what I use, although it's pricey. Another options is to throw a bottle of ZDDPlus or STP Oil Treatment (blue bottle) in with the oil to get the zinc levels up to where they need to be.

I recommend copper plugs. The only added advantage of platinums is longevity. I ran autolite 45's (copper) in my 331 for a long time and never had a problem.

I use Torco 10-40 in my roller 5.0. And also Autolite coppers.
