Default 1967/1968 Convertible Glass Rear window?

Hello all. On our 1965 Mustang convertible, the previous owner had put a 1967/1968 optional glass window in when she had the top replaced (in 1978). Since then, the material in between the two pieces of glass has deteriorated, leaving a gap in between them. Does anyone know if that is avaliable to put back in there? Right now, we have been putting white tape across it to seal up the hole, in case of rain, but we would like a more permanent fix, without changing the top.

You can replace the glass window without doing the whole top. I don't know if there's any way to replace the silicone hinge, never seen it done successfully. Check with your local top shop.

We considered replacing the window, but the top is discolored from being 32 years old, so I don't think the material would match.

Default convertible glass window

Did you ever find way to repair the split window? I have the same problem and am looking for a magic silicone that will work.

Not yet, but hopefully now that this thread has been brought to the front again, someone will have an idea.

Of course, the tape is just more of an excuse to drive it with the top down!

Bringing the thread back to life -- I have the same problem. Anyone know of a solution or do I have to buy a whole new window?

This is why I like the plastic window. You can buy four of them for the cost of one glass. Four plastic windows would last at least 20 years even on a car parked outdoors.

But you can't just switch, can you? I mean, you'd have to change the whole top, right?

No, the top is the same with glass or plastic.

Default glass window repair for conv top

The connector between the two window halves is silicone. To repair this requires a little care and knowledge of caulking. You can use a SIKA brand silicone tape called "123-tape" on each side of the glass halves and the SIKA 190 silicone to glue the whole contraption together.

Apply silicone across the rear plate of the glass adjacent to the split while the glass is laid flat on a stable surface, apply by pressing, the 123 tape, clean mess. After this application dries, overnight, flip the two glass halves over very carefully and slightly overfill the seam between the glass halves. Press the 123 tape onto the seam being sure that no voids are present. Place some but not a lot of weight on the installed 123 tape during both applications to be sure you maintain a clean flat appearance.

I understand that to preserve the glass joint longer, some people unzip the glass before putting the tp down to reduce the stress on the joint.
