Fuel pump for 67 289
I think I need to replace the fuel pump on my 67 289.
Is this the correct part?

I am leaning toward the mechanical pump to keep things simple and cheap. Any great reason to go electric?
My friend helping me thinks the electric is easier on the starter and engine.

A) There's no real reason to go electric. A good mechanical pump works just fine for most carbureted situations.
B) Yes, that's the right pump, but I don't know why you'd get one from there. Go to your local reputable (meaning not Autozone or Pep Boys) parts store and get one. A good Airtex or Carter factory replacement pump will do you fine. I've got one fueling my 331 and I've had no issues in 6 years.

Wow, $40 seems a bit much, I got a Carter fuel pump for $25-30 from my local Autozone and it worked well on my '67 289.
What's wrong with pep boys or autozone? I understand that independently owned shops don't have it as easy as large chains, and I would undoubtedly support an independent local shop, if there was one where I live.... We have an Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, and O'Reilly's all within a mile of each other... talk about competition!

Yeah, looks like autozone has an airtex fuel pump for $23.
I guess I am not sure exactly what kind of items a parts store like autzone will have versus stuff it will not. Any good guidelines on that?

Their online store (which I'm assuming you used to find that fuel pump) is a good source. There's no guarantee that they'll have everything you find online though. However, almost everything they have in store is catalogged in store. I got a carb rebuild kit and they found it by looking up the Make, model, year, engine, and then carb. So you get the right thing.

Start asking local reputable auto shops who they get their parts from. The quality shops will usually use O'Reilly's or an independent (Napa, Parts Plus, etc). Customer service and quality parts are worth more than having the cheapest part all the time.
I did forget that autozone sells Airtex. Having sold both Carter and Airtex pumps, I've found the Airtex pumps to be more reliable (less returns). Airtex builds pumps for the military HMMVW's, and the same quality goes into their factory replacement pumps. Most returns I've had (with either mfg) can be traced back to a related issue on the car rather than a problem with the pump itself. The Airtex rep told me that if my fuel pump warranty percentage goes over 2%, he'll personally come out and look into why the pumps are failing. I've yet to call him.
