Well I'll just go with a 190 and drill a hole and see from there. I haven't had any issues with coolant for over half year. So I should have sorted all my problems. I know for a fact I'm running to cool. Interested to see what changes

Well, for one thing, the heater will become, as one French writer said in 1965, "formidable". Think about that, the water in it will be 30° warmer, which means the air coming out of it will be about that much warmer, too.

I tried looking for this thermostat as the high flow idea sounds good to me. But I cant seem to locate a 190. It seems like its sold by flowkoolers something but that site has been blocked and I dont feel like finding out if its by mistake.

Could you point me to someone who sells what you've got?

Thanks

Really? Jeeze, the 190° should be no problem. Glazier/Nolan stocks them, p/n G08366.

+1 with the 190. I had more heating problems with a 180. Could have been the thermostat, but once I went with 190 I never have problems and usually stay around 180-185 anyways, and thats in CA heat summer time.

He's referring to the high-flow design, like the this one. I run a high-flow water pump and restricting everything with a stock style t-stat didn't make that much sense to me. I've had better luck keeping the engine in the proper temp range with this style than the stock style.

As a side note, stay away from the Mr Gasket types. I've had two break on me, and a friend recently broke one in his Mustang. The body tends to separate, making it act like it's open all the time.

I had a 160 in mine with a small 20 inch radiator and it game me problems all the time with the temp running up to 210-215 before i shut off the car. once i put in the 190 it was steady at 190-200. thats with my crappy 20 inch rad. cant wait for my new one to come...

i guess the 180 would be the way to go?

I'll be shopping for a new alternator as well :-) I'm currently using one from a ford escort from a scrapper after mine died and that doesn't charge properly at idle
I would go with the 180 as many have suggested. Also for the alternator which I have gone through many in the past myself, I would go with a 1 wire PowerMaster. Thats' the last alternator I got about 3 years ago now and it has not given me any problems since day one.

Ford specified a 190°. I knew one of these Ford engineers, and he was adamant on the point.

I pulled a stock alternator out of a wreck in the 70's, and since put over 200,000 miles on it.

i think any alternator will be an improvment to what I am running now :-) i have a feeling that all the cars around here use either powermaster or are still stock. So I'm easy on that point. for the thermostat I'll just go for 190 and see what happens. If I don't like it I can change again, really no money/work involved there. And if Ford specified 190, well I'll try that first
