If you have 2.78 gears, switching to 3.50 will change everything. A better performing engine can't do much for you with the economy gears.

For the budget engine:

Performer RPM intake
Edelbrock 600 cfm carb
289HP air cleaner
distributor recurve
port-match the heads to a pair of headers or 289HP manifolds 289/302 Cylinder Head Port Matching
C9OZ-6250-C hydraulic cam (screw-in studs are a good idea, but not mandatory)
2" or 2.25" dual exhaust

What's as important as what's on this list is what's not on it, such as a buncha chrome, fancy ignition, fat wires, etc.

Do the above list, and the car will have enough power to cause a divorce.

lucky for me im not married yet lol
i got a electronic dissy and such at home for it.
i know the gear's suck in it...im on the look out for a 9inch and ill put some 3.50.1 gear's in it.

just came from the local classic burger shop...the knock is getting worse. but i just dumped $447 getting the headliner installed and new glass put in...so im flat broke for some time now...

did i mention this is my DD? lol

IMO if fundage is a big issue I would slap a crank kit (and 1 new rod) in the 289 and call it good, if you have some more $$ slap some good aftermarket heads on the 289 and a 4 bbl intake, imo, (with the price of heads today) this will give you the biggest bang for the buck.

All of this assuming a spun rod and not a spun main...

Chances are you can patch up the 289 for $300 or $400 by doing the work yourself, anything more will cost more...

The problem with speed is that its a lot like being an alcoholic. Once you get used to being drunk, you need more and more to get the same high. First you need to decide what it is you want the end result to be. It also sounds like your on a budget. If your looking for the biggest bang for the buck. I would consider turning that 351W into a fire breathing road monster by turning it into a 351W Track Boss, (or what is sometimes refered to as a Clevor engine.) If you dont have the kind of dough it would take to buy $2000 victor jr heads and all the other expensive parts you will need to build a stroker. then you might take a look on ebay for a B&A 351 Track Boss intake manifold, you should be able to pick one up for around $400 then get a set of 2v or 4v 351 Cleveland heads and put them on, (with the right pistons to match either the 2v or 4v heads of course). You can find many articles on this Clevor build by doing an internet search. Then later you can add a stroker kit when you can afford one.

If you put a built 347 in the car, it'd need a ton of chassis reinforcement, heavier rear end, better trans, better suspension....you'll rip the stock chassis up. Consider what you're getting into. Once you start really building power, everything changes.

that's one of the many thing's i have learned being a off roader.
it will get a full cage and sub frame conectors and im already on the look out for a 31 spline 9inch. and will most likely get a T5 or a c6.
it's a good thing i can do all of it myself or i would be screwed.

i was a custom fabractior but it turned into a job rather then a love....
