Default 71 4 speed car questions

-How difficult is it to convert an automatic to a manual transmission?
-If I put a 429 in a 71 instead of a 351 are the linkage mounting points and overall setup different?

Someome told me it was a whole lot different and much harder to install a 429 with a 4 speed than a 351. He said that some of the parts are not even reproduced for the linkage.

Some of the 351 4-speed parts are reproduced. Neither equalizer is, though.

That's the real name of the "Z-bar".

The 71-73 clutch parts I know are reproduced are the clutch pedal, assist spring, upper clutch rod, upper clutch rod firewall seal, engine-mounted equalizer pivot, inner and outer equalizer bushings, and lower clutch rod.

The pivot on the list is the 351 item. I don't know if any of the other parts also work for the 429. Certainly the pedal, seal, spring, and firewall seal, but the rest, only maybe.

I went from from C6 auto to manual (professionally done, I wanted it done right and don't have the proper
equipment or time). If you're a good mechanic and have a way to swap the tranny, it doesn't look that hard. The C6 and FMX auto trannys are heavy, about 200lbs.
If you're going that far though, why not put in a 5-speed? A good toploader costs about the same as a heavy-duty 5-speed. You will need a different driveshaft. Also why bother with Z-bar?, just use a new cable clutch kit. They make one to fit a 71, goto moderndriveline.com for more info and parts.

Can't help with the 429 (i know at least you'll need heavier springs), but again why bother?
You can stroke a 351C to 408ci and it will be much lighter than a 429. Even a stock 351 can have plenty of power with headers, carb, intake and the right gears.

With cable and hydraulic setups available, anything is possible. Even in your driveway. Do some research, call some vendors, buy some parts and git-r-done.
