The smell of oil....
 

Or at least that's what I think it is. Everytime I turn my '67 off, it has this smell of oil. The car does not burn oil however. I notice that the air filter always has the same smell and its pretty strong. Ideas what's causing this?

i have a 67 with a 289 and have the EXACT same problem and it sucks because i park in the garage so its worse :P

Could it be the vent on the valve covers?

Sounds like your PCV system is not working.
Does your PCV valve open/close and is it hooked to a intake vacuum port?
Is your breather clogged with oil?

I'm going to have to get out a manual and look for the PCV valve. I'm a novice when it comes to parts and functions.

Breather is part of the PCV or?

The inside of the engine is constantly changing air pressure so this air mixed with toxic gasses has to go somewhere so it gets vented thru the valve cover. A PCV hooked to manifold vacuum will pull the bad gasses out of the (passenger side) valve cover and burn them. Clean air gets pulled into the engine from the breather on the driver side valve cover (also used as the oil cap). If the breather is clogged with oil or gunk, it won't work properly and you'll get a nasty oily/gas/exhaust fumey smell. Likewise if the PCV has no vacuum, or you don't have a PCV, same smell.
Some of the early cars vented these toxic gases by hose under the car. Unless it's a trailer queen, get a PCV, it is so much better when it works right and it doesn't affect performance at all.

sorry bout this but is the PCV one of the tubes connected to the carburetor? if it is mine is pretty loose.

Edit: or is it the copper tube? mine keeps coming out of its place.

Also check for oil leaks at the valve covers, oil can drip or run onto the exhaust (manifolds/hearers or downpipes generating a strong oil smell when it burns off on the hot exhaust.
