c4 vs 5 speed...my on going debate

You can get ahold of a junk world class T5 an rebuild it with and astroperformance gear set. They cost a bit, but its much cheaper than a TKO and would easily handle the power you are talking about. I've never used one, but read about them. Plus installing the T5 would be easier than a TKO, and you get the nice overdrive.

EDIT: It looks like they also sell completely rebuilt T5's that will cover what your looking for for considerably less than a TKO as well.

i've thought about a beefed up AOD but isn't it expensive for the conversion kit? I thought they didn't just bolt right into the car and some modifications had to be made. noroof66...how high are your rpms at 60 on the highway? 3.55 is a nice gear, but if im making peak power at a higher rpm (I.E. 6,000rpm), won't i need a lower gear to get me up there? (3.73 or 4.10).
The reason I went with C4 was to cruise and not worry about shifting, especially in traffic heading to the beach. I have another car with 5 speed so I knew what to expect. I also knew I would beat on the car a little more with a 5 speed.
A built C4 with shift kit is still a lot of fun....

[QUOTE=built67;7478451 i keep thinking 5 speed. only problem is modern driveline quoted me 4400 for a tko600....[/QUOTE]
Really? Seems steep to me even if we are talking about everything you need....

I have to respect the "package" thing, but careful parts selection and the ability to make a rear mount etc, can go a long way to mitigate costs.
That said, a well built C-4 is always a good alternative.

The AOD. AODE, 4R70W take the same add-ons to install that the TKO or World Class 5 speeds will to install and a bit more. The C4 and 3.7x rear gears is a good choice unless you are running a stock engine with no mods. You will run about 3000 - 3500 rpm at freeway speeds and that will put you at a good point below your peak torque rpm at freeway speeds. Getting passed is due only to being afaid of the noise you are making and not at all due to the ability of the engine to turn more than 4000 rpm all day. As long as I go the speed limit I get passed by just about 95% of the cars on the road - however anytime I don't want to get passed all I have to do is spend a second on the throttle and I am the one passing.
If you don't like the sound of your engine at near the torque peak - put on a quieter exhaust.

The biggest difference in mpg is determined by driving speed and habits.
As a kid I used to ride in early 1970's 60 series gas trucks, these trucks would like to be shifted to the next gear at about 4,800 rpm, the next gear would drop to about 4,500 rpm. At highway speed the trucks would often pass 5,000 rpm and stay there for hours. At first, I used to cringe at the engine noise, but they stayed together,,,, for a long, long, long, time...
That is where I learned to appreciate the sound of a good running (relatively) high rpm V-8, and I still like it....
