Default neutral safety switch on a 66 coupe questions

well i did a few upgrades to my car last winter and have had the itch to take it to the strip for a test and tune and see what she will do. well i go through tech inspection and they asked me if i had a neutral safety switch and of course my frankencar doesnt have one and they would not let me run, which really made me mad. i told the inspector that "i ran last year with no problems" and he replied "well who ever let you past tech should not have let you run" and i replied "you inspected my car and let me run" and he replied " well i shouldnt have let you run" i was thinking to my self "learn how to do your job you dusty old fart!!" but i kept my wits about me, plus my dad has a factory five roadster (65 cobra replica) and let me run, he could never break 14.5 and my second run was a 13.6 in his car while blowing the doors off of a civic hatchback with a fart can, that made my night in full, so now on to the question

where do i get a neutral safety switch for my car? is there a universal kit i can buy? it has a c4 auto that is an early 70s model, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Does your back up lights work? Look for something like this where your shifter linkage bolts to the tranny.

Buy a new neutral safty switch from any parts store, disconnect the jumper thats on the car now and plug it into the new switch. If your wiring has been hacked to bypass the switch Then you will need to buy a new plug and wire that in.

The neutral safety switch on a C4 is mounted on the trans. You likely have one and don't realize it. Of course, it's probably not connected.

The crescent-shaped thing with the wire attached is the switch. Any Mustang supplier, and likely local parts house, should be able to provide one. A 66 would also have a wire harness feeding out the firewall top-center to connect it. That will have to come from a Mustang supplier.

so my car does not have a neutral safety switch, are the wires for the switch coming out of the fire wall above the main wiring harness near the master cylinder? these wires have always been there and i never knew what they were for

Well, we still need to know. Is it missing, or is it not connected properly? 64-66 manual trans cars simply had the under-dash connectors snapped to each other instead of the NS feed harness. If some meathead has done this, your NS could be in place, properly wired from the trans to the firewall, and still not work. So, crawl under the car with a flashlight and find out if its there.

D'ya see the round plug above the rectangular plug? The round one is the NS wiring feed harness. You can just barely see the plugs where the switch wire connects, down by the gas pedal shaft.
