ford 8" 3rd member removal question
Hey guys,
My rear end is leaking guess the front gaskets is shot. How do I pull apart the 3rd member? Is there any way to removal the axles without taking all the rear brakes apart? Thanks for any tips!

yes. there are 4 1/2" nuts that hold the axle retaining plates in. Pull the drums off and reverse them onto the studs.Use a couple of lug nuts to hole them loosely and use them like a slide hammer to pull the axles.
then you can remove all the nuts around the 3rd member and use a dead blow mallet to loosen it. Leave a couple of nuts on in case it breaks loose and be ready for it, its heavy if your on your back

yep. the oil in there will stink like mad. so don't get any of that on you. smell like a skunk for a week. Pinion seal is dead easy. and the rear seal could not be any simpler. for the rear seal just unbolt the back cover and instead of sticking a gasket in there I use dirko or RTV. it's just messy. but as said, for front and back seal no need for pulling it apart
