A well-assembled stock shifter works perfectly. Really. No aftermarket shifter fits the car without cutting, drilling, or hacking the floor. Every aftermarket shifter I have driven was to some degree a PITA. The guy up the street has a highly modified 69, and after dealing with his 'racing' shifter for a year, he paid good money to a local shop to have it switched back to stock. The usual problem with stock shifters is the bushings are shot. For $5, you can get it back to working like new. Occasionally, the lockout in the lever needs to be adjusted. Very rare, though, the factory usually got that right, so unless some kid was screwing around with it, the bushings will be all you need.

Here's the stock shifter in a 69 Shelby:

I totally agree with 2+2GT. I replaced the bushings in my shifter and it's like new. I was alos thinking about an aftermarket shifter, but don't want to ruin the look of the cars interior.

i replaced the bushing in my c4 shifter in 20 minutes or so first time i did it. my shifter was loose and all over the place, there were NO old bushings in there, i put some lube and put the 2 bushings on. feels soooo much better now.
