What size carburetor?

How many cfm's do I need for my 289 engine stock? I would think no higher than 600 cfm.

A stock 289 with a 4 barrel set up doesn't need that big of a carb. The Motorcraft that came on the car is 480 CFM, and all the carb you will ever need for that engine.

Well, with a stock iron set-up you just don't need that size. Now, if you put on let's say a weiand aluminum intake, some long tube JBA Tri-Y's and a mild to loping cam, then the engine will run better with more hp with a bigger carb. But, you simply don't need that big of a carb, and your engine may even run worse than by using the 4100.

Then you will be getting into the 600 cfm range with that set-up. Get those installed and see if your 4100 can handle it. My bet is that it will, but you may get a few more ponies with the 600-650 cfm carb.
On edit: Understand that adding aftermarket parts is expensive, and the amount of extra ponies you get may or may not be worth it. It just depends on how much power you want, and how much you are willing to pay for it.

RE: What size carburetor?

Im just gonna put an edelbrock carb on with some headers. thats all i want.

RE: What size carburetor?

Why do you think an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb is better for your set-up than the 4100 you already have?

RE: What size carburetor?

i have a 2100d. Why are you saying i should put a 4100 on there and i would be better off?
This is why i cant get a 4100!
http://store.freeretailer.com/defaul...code+71+show+1
Thats $250
plus the $200 dollar core i dont have.
Now could i send in my 2100 core
and get some money off the price.

RE: What size carburetor?

Sorry about that. I assumed you had a 4 barrel set-up already by your question about a 600 cfm carb. Skuse me. :D
