I went with 10W-40 and after changing the oil and the fuel pump, tried to fire up, it ran briefly, then shut down. To get it started I have to spray carb cleaner in the carb bores. Every 6th or so time I do so, it stays running for about a minute, then stalls out again. What the hell?
did you follow the instructions that came with the rebuild kit for the carb? Try taking the line off the carb and cranking it over and see if you're getting good fuel. it could just be that your fuel lines are gunked up.
I checked pump to carb lines already....wonder if tank to pump lines are the problem....anyone know of a teensy plumbers snake? lol. Don't wanna have to buy a line kit, so broke right now.
Everyone I talk to says fuel... I'm wondering if the fuel gauge is malfunctioning and I really don't have a half tank....tempted to drop it and clean it out anyways.
Collapsed fuel line (rubber) at tank. Fixed.......need to get a p side inner fender apron to repair the battery tray area now, then replace the lock rods on the dside...anyone here have any info on these door rods? The ones I ordered look small...
verified that the rods are correct. Waiting to fix a couple of other things before I replace the Lock rods. Got my CFR Ford HEI yesterday, will install once I get the P-side inner fender apron replaced with a new battery.
Out of curiosity, does anyone here have a SB with the Ford version of HEI ignition? I haven't installed mine yet because I'm a little confused on how to wire it in.

I'm guessing your old distributor was a points-style distributor, in which case you'll need to replace the resistance wire originally ran to your coil with a 12-gauge wire. Wiring up the rest depends on how many pins are on your HEI module.
In hindsight, take a voltmeter to your current power wire. If you get 12 volts, then you won't have to replace it. If you only get 9, then it'll have to go.
