Difference between 289 and a 351 windsor
Can anyone give me a simple easy to spot difference between a 289 and a 351 Windsor.
I'm in the UK, and I'm just trying to ID the engine in my 68 Fastback. A picture would be great.
Thanks....

351 - Has about 1" more block above timing cover...
302 - Shorter deck, deck about even with timing cover
These are essentially the same engine design, but the 351 block has about an extra inch or so in cylinder length to accommodate the longer stroke of the 351.

At first glance, 289/302's look very similar to the 351 Windsors. The main difference is the 351 Windsors engines are wider at the intake manifold because of the increased deck height of the block (about 1.3" taller). I always determined the difference by looking at the firing order - 289/302W are (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8) and the 351W is (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8).

The easiest way to tell the difference is to look for the two vertical ribs, one on each side of the distributor that run from the intake mounting surface to the timing cover..If it has them it is a 351..Look at the first picture that JMD posted as it shows them very clearly

The 351C is also a smallblock, of the Cleveland family. Uses the same motor mounts, flywheel, and bellhousing as the 351W, in fact Cleveland heads can be installed on the 289/302/351W with a little customizing. In fact, the 351C 4V heads orignally appeared on the BOSS 302. The overall dimensions of the W and C are nearly identical, and they have the same bore and stroke.
