Best way to fix hole (emblem hole) in prep for paint?

Hi all,
This winter I am going to prep my car for a paint job. I have bought books but no one address holes. I want to get rid of a couple of emblems and go to GT emblems. Any ideas?
Thanks, Walt

ive thought of that too. Maybe you could tell the body shop to not cover the holes. Then they just paint over the holes and when they are done put your emblems on. My question is when should i drill my holes to put F-O-R-D on the the hood? Before or after paint?

I used to do body and paint on the weekends when I was young. If we shaved emblems, we'd just run a little bondo over the holes. As far as putting emblems on before or after paint, fit the emblems first and install after paint. That way if you have a crooked letter you can fix it before paint.

The other way is to weld them up, and grind 'em down. Nice thing is you don't have to worry about the bondo coming loose down the road.

I saw an article where they brazed them. I don't have the patience for that, nor do I like the metal that hot (but then if I had the patience maybe the metal wouldn't get that hot :D).

The best idea for (small) holes I've seen is to clean the holes well then take a solding iron heat the hole then fill it with a small amount of soldier. Usually the sheet metal is so thin that welding or even brazing could warp the metal. This way you fill your hole with soldier, cover with a little bit of bondo and you're all set.

I used to use a penny from the back with JB Weld. Then I would bondo over the rest of the holes.

I've never had much luck with JB-weld. But, I guess in this less stressful application it might work out OK. You won't warp the metal with a welder if the temp is down enough and you are using a Mig welder. That's what the body guys do.

I think a peny may end up coroding over time, but a piece of metal as a backer seems like a good idea.

I still like the idea of soldiering the hols though.

Ya know, the soldering method just might work. Use a butane torch, then hit it with a rag before it cools to smooth it out some. It sure would be easy to sand to a nice smooth finish.

I've actually seen it doen simply by sticking a small soldering iron in the hole them filling with soldier. Most old time body guys prefer lead to bondo so why not soldier to bondo?

It seems to make good sense.
