Junkyard T5's

I'm converting my 67 from auto to 5 speed, I have everything EXCEPT the trans itself. A local yard has 3 all removed from late 80's GT's. Other than physical appearance, how can I tell which is in the best condition?

No way to really tell until you install it and drive it. Or disassemble it and check out the insides.

you can try and attach a shifter real quick and put it through the gears. It won't tell you everything, but if it doesn't shift then you know it's bad. Most junkyards will give you some kind of warranty on it though, even if it's only 90 days or something like that.

make sure you only buy a world class t5.....

quakershaker Jan 28, 2012 07:40 PM

Why a world class? Whats the difference? Also, what do you think would be a fair price?

1slow67 Jan 28, 2012 08:27 PM

World class is stronger than a normal one

a world class t-5 is the strongest off-the-shelf t-5 you can buy, which really doesn't say much about the t-5 since it's only good for like 340tq or something like that...

I thought the Cobra Z spec was the strongest?

touche, I stand corrected. Forgot about that little bugger. But even that only maxxes out at what, 450tq?

EDIT: ok I looked it up. Here's the breakdown based on manufacturer's ratings:

pre-85 (non world class): 4cyl max tq- 240
8cyl max tq- 265
85-89 (world class): max tq- 265

90-93 (world class): max tq- 300
93 (cobra spec): max tq- 310

94-95: max tq- 300

"z" spec t-5: max tq- 330

of course ratios changed up all over the place as the years went on and were different in 4cyl applications.

Probably, seems if you really want a lot of power you need a TKO or T56(which I would love to have)
