Default What's the deal with power steering pumps?

The power steering pump is not original on my 66, surprise. The pump that's on my 302 has a downward return and a center pressure fitting. It is attached to a 67-68 bracket. It all works, but now a leak that was small has become large. I am going to remove it and take a look, but if I have to replace it what do I replace it with?

I notice the 66's I have seen have a downward return fitting, but they also have a stud sticking out of the back. 67's have a return that faces up. What a PITA.

I also noticed while out for a short ride that the level was low, the pump started to buzz, and it seemed to affect the whole engine. I think the pump is on the way out. How stiff should the pulley rotate? Seems tight.

65-66 requires a stud on the back, to brace the pump when using the correct bracket. The bracket to the rear on 67-69 was a separate piece.

If the pump, with belt removed, is hard to turn by hand it's trashed.

This is the 65-66 Ford/Thompson pump. Note the stud, and the return that goes down and out. The 67-69 used totally different hose routing.

As far as the turning the pump with pulley off, a good pump will still have a drag/lpoe in the turning. This is due to the orbit of the shoes rotating in the obit of the cam pack, a turning with drag.

Yes, different than the smooth turning of a late model pump that has non cam pack designs, different that vain pumps which turn easy, smooth.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. The current pump is dead. It is so noisy and hardly works. I may have a line on a correct bracket and pump. Hopefully I can get the right setup on this engine.

The pumps aren't so bad, although I heard many a complaint about new ones leaking, its the brackets for a 66 that are expensive. I have also read of some fitment issues on the repops. I don't want to buy a repop for 160 only to find it's off.

What did your switch to manual entail?

New drag link, and driver side inner and outer tie rod and tie rod adjusting sleeve. About $125 or so in parts and a alinement, so like $200 or so total. I got tired or my pump going out sucked because i just rebuilt everything, mine just aways had something go wrong with it. Also my car was slammed and would rip the studs out for the header drop bracket, so i welded it and it started to put cracks in the frame rail. So i had enough of it.

I just got rid of 2 powersteering brakcets for cheap. New ones from cj pony are only $150.

I also seen these ones for 280 if your going to buy an new bracket and pump, might be better to go with this one for the same price. I never used on but had a buddy that put one on he said he likes it. http://www.cjponyparts.com/borgeson-...-1970/p/PSPK2/

Ah yes I saw that, but that pump needs the power steering gear box. The whole upgrade kit with hoses and such is close to $1K.
