help with info for a 9"...
hello everyone,
I am fairly new to the site and id appreciate any help and or info/advice i can get.
I have a 1965 mustang fastback, and i have a 9" rear end out of a 70's mustang that id like to use for it. Im going to redo the gears and repair it since the rearend itself is to wide id like to narrow it so the tires wont be sticking out (not really my style). would it be cheaper to buy a built 9" or fix repair/upgrade this one?.... and how do i go about finding the propper width to cut the rear end?.... if anyone has information on this project and or pricing i would really appreciate the feedback

The 65/6 housing measures 52.25" end to end. If you are able, you can narrow the housing yourself. You can make a small adjustment to clear a particular wheel or tire selection. Mine is .5" narrower than stock to fit my tires and wheels. The ends must perpendicular to the axle line, otherwise you will roach bearings. You will need to buy axles to fit the new width. I recommend finalizing your wheel and rear brake choice before going any further.
New housings aren't terribly expensive. Many rear end shops will narrow a housing for $150 or less.
look up dutchman axles, currier and moser for pricing.

You are in for a lot of work with those wheels. The right way to do is to place the wheels and tires (you will need to cut the wheel wells to do this) and figure the rear end from the wheel mounting flanges.
