I have been in contact with a salvage yard who has a base wheel for my car. They describe it as a 14 X 6 steel wheel for 4 lugs and a 4 1/2 inch lug pattern. The 4 lugs and 4 1/2 inch pattern sounds right and my tires are 14 inch tires, but what does the '6' mean in 14 X 6 ? Does this sound like it's the correct base wheel?

I guess my concern is that all 14X6 wheels may not be made the same, might not fit the car's drum. Am I over-thinking?

In a word, yes you are over thinking. 14 x 6, with a 4 on 4.5 lug pattern and the guy says they are off a 68 Mustang and you are putting them on a 68 Mustang I'm not sure there is much chance that they are not going to work. These wheel can always be found on Craig's list so going to a junk yard might be a bit much but at least with a junk yard you should be able to take them back if they don't work.

Why do you need new wheels in the first place?
