looking for first mustanng need but more head room!
 

im currently 6'8" and 16. in the market for a first car, ive loved classic mustangs since day one the problem is i dont fit! which suxs. my dad thought it would be imposible for me to get a muscle car of any type because of insurance but one his buddies told him a way it was possible. so he told me to start looking, ive found some "affordable" late 60's mustangs. but my dad looked up the head room and found out my head would be in the roof. so i was wondering if there is any way i could get enough head and leg room without droping the floor pans which he says is out of the question. like rebolting the seat and/or getting a different seat. so if you guys could help me out thanks.

Replacing the seat pans is out of the question? The 69-70 FB seat pan is 1" lower, but yeah, that takes a whole day, and is kinda permanent. Why don't you just get a convertible? Don't laugh, they have more headroom with the top up than coupes.

The problem will solve itself, though, if you extend or relocate the seat tracks. Big guy like you will need the seat to go farther back, or your legs will be around the steering wheel. As the seat moves back, it also moves down.

You can gain 2 - 3 inches by removing the raised pan that the seat rests on. This pan is spot welded to the floor and can be removed by drilling out the spot welds. Keep in mind this pan keeps the seat level and you would have to use a couple of small spacers to level the seat when it is sitting directly on the floor. You could also move the seat back a couple of inches as well. I would probably lower both seats to keep everything looking balanced. You can keep the pan and have it welded back in if you ever wish to return the car to stock for resale, etc.

You could try a 1971-73 Mustang. The body style is a little bigger and more room inside.
IMHO, they have a great look too.
A Ford Torino might be a good alternative too, and maybe easier to find.

If your not stuck on stangs, as most of us here are, you might look at a challenger. or a Chevy II. They are both awesome muscle car with a ton of room. The chev is a smaller car along the size of a mustang, while the challenger is huge compared to the pony. But they get pricey quick. I think your best bet is what was stated before and remove the pan and get a leaner racing seat in a 68+ stang.

The leg room is fine, if i had my way i would like to have more, but i am not cramped inside

I guess a tall guy can have short legs and long torso, or vice versa, so one size does not fill all...

@Maj: How do you fit in a 69 at 6'7? I have a 69 and I am 6'4ish and I am in desperate need of lowering the seat pan so that i can drive more comfortably.
@tallmustangguy: Why is lowering the seat pan out of the question? I plan on doing this and getting new seats and possibly floor carpet at the same time:

next project i do i plan on lowering seat pan and Im only 5'10". I put new seat covers and foam recently in my 70 and I am definitely sitting higfher than i like.
