Can anyone tell me what's the correct oil or lub for my 1968 Mustang's steering box? Thanx in advance!!

probably 80w gear oil but dont hold me to that...

There is a gearbox lube call out of C3AZ-19578-A when the box is overhauled and the cover plate is off. there is no provision to service the GB in the car

Actually there is a fill plug screwed into the top of the box for filling. It is a ford spec grease that comes in a tube, don't use lube it's too liquid and will settle. Here is a great description of how to fill it in the car. 2 people and a grease gun is easiest - 1 to hold the nozzle to the fill hole, one to pump the grease gun:

I looked it up on NPD before buying mine locally, it's Motorcraft NL G1 #2 it looks like:

I lent my tube to a buddy to fill his so I can't check mine but that's what I bought. It made a big difference in steering play as it did for my buddies '69 also.

Thanks for the correction. it just goes to show that the FSM isn't always completely accurate.

Well I'm sure ford doesn't consider pumping more grease into the box 'service' as they probably never expected to the car to last long enough (or be kept in service 50 yrs.) to have the grease break down. Adding grease doesn't get the old grease out either so it's really just a partial fix.

I guess they have the fill plug in order to top off the box once it's been rebuilt and as much grease as possible has been put in through the cover before reinstall. My buddy with the '69 installed a zerk fitting into a screw plug so he could screw it into the fill plug hole and just pump away like refilling a ball joint, it was much easier than trying to hold the grease gun nipple against the hole.

I was able to find the Premium Lube at one the local Ford Dealers and I think I'll install zerk fitting to solve the problems of adding lube if needed.
